<p>Though still young, Highlands has built a strong foundation. The focus is entirely on direct online sales and developing a loyal community around the brand’s story. <p>In 2021, an innovative dog kibble brand was launched with a clear mission: healthy food for dogs that’s also good for the planet. Instead of using meat as a base, the brand consciously chooses insect protein. “It’s not only rich in nutrients but also hypoallergenic—ideal for dogs with allergies—and much more sustainable than meat,” says the founder. The result? A dog kibble that benefits both the animal’s well-being and the environment.</p>

<p><strong>Steady growth in Belgium and the Netherlands</strong></p>



<p>Since its launch, the company has grown steadily. The focus is on the Belgian and Dutch markets, where more and more conscious consumers are choosing sustainable alternatives. “We’re growing quietly,” they say modestly. “But that gives us the space to keep prioritizing quality and truly serve our customers well.”</p>

<p>Sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have — it’s a must. Especially for e-commerce companies. With the introduction of the <strong>PPWR</strong> (<em>Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation</em>), Europe is stepping up its game. This legislation, which will be phased in from 2026, aims to <strong>drastically reduce packaging waste</strong>, <strong>stimulate reuse</strong>, and <strong>make the European market more sustainable and transparent</strong>.</p>



<p>But what does this mean for you as a webshop or e-commerce entrepreneur? We’ve broken it down for you.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What exactly is the PPWR?</h4>



<p>The PPWR is a <strong>European regulation</strong> that replaces the current packaging directive. Unlike a directive, a regulation applies <strong>immediately and directly</strong> in all EU member states – including Belgium. The law covers the <strong>entire lifecycle of packaging</strong>: from design and production to collection and recycling.</p>



<p><strong>The goals?</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A circular packaging system in the EU</li>



<li>Climate neutrality by 2050</li>



<li>Less waste, more reuse</li>



<li>Fair competition through harmonised rules</li>
</ul>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What are the key changes?</h4>



<p>There are many, but here are the most important ones:</p>



<p><strong>1. Packaging passport &amp; compliance check</strong></p>



<p>Every packaging must include a <strong>compliance declaration</strong> showing it meets all the requirements (e.g. composition, recyclability, reusability). This info must be registered in a producer database, with extra obligations for manufacturers, importers, and distributors.</p>



<p><strong>2. Recyclability becomes the norm</strong></p>



<p>From 2027, all packaging will receive a <strong>recycling performance grade</strong> (A, B, or C).<br>Note: <strong>From 2030</strong>, packaging with <strong>less than 70% recyclability</strong> will be banned.</p>

<p><strong>3. Minimum recycled plastic content</strong></p>



<p>Using plastic in your packaging? Starting in 2030, minimum percentages of <strong>post-consumer recycled plastic</strong> will apply.<br>For example: beverage bottles and PET packaging in contact with food must include <strong>at least 30%</strong> recycled material.</p>



<p><strong>4. Reuse becomes mandatory</strong></p>



<p>Certain packaging types — including <strong>e-commerce transport packaging</strong> — will be subject to <strong>mandatory reuse targets</strong>.<br>For e-commerce: <strong>40% of packaging must be reusable by 2030</strong>. Refill systems will also be encouraged.</p>



<p><strong>5. Standardised labels and symbol requirements</strong></p>



<p>Starting in 2027, each packaging must clearly show:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The materials it’s made from</li>



<li>How the consumer should dispose of it</li>



<li>Whether a deposit or reuse applies</li>



<li>The percentage of recycled content</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What does this mean for your webshop?</h3>

After picking, the goods must be packed. Since we work transparently, the prices for packaging materials are provided upfront. This way, you can calculate the package cost more accurately. We always offer a shipping option valid up to 30kg, including home delivery, a required signature, insurance, and a second delivery attempt! This shipping option has a higher cost than a shipment delivered to a post point without a signature or insurance. Webship does not give the cheapest option but the most logical option based on the customer!</p>



<p>Keep the destination country in mind. Since shipping costs vary by country, it is important to have a clear view of the volume sent abroad. Analyze your data so you won’t be caught by surprise!</p>

<li><strong>Just in Time (JIT):</strong> This method is used when there&#8217;s an optimal alignment between supplier and customer. This means that goods are immediately shipped to the customer upon delivery. This minimizes stock levels and reduces inventory costs.</li>



<li><strong>First In, First Out (FIFO):</strong> In the FIFO system, the first products that come in are the first ones to go out. This is the most commonly used inventory management system for products with an expiration date. In this specific case, we also refer to FEFO or <strong>First Expired, First Out</strong>.</li>

<p><strong>Lot Number or Batch Code</strong></p>



<p>Most food products are produced in batches or lots, as factory machines can&#8217;t produce an unlimited amount of products at once. By printing a lot number or batch code on the packaging, the company can precisely identify which production batch the product came from. If there&#8217;s an issue with one of your products, you can easily trace the affected batch using the lot number.</p>



<p><strong>Which Codes Should I Look Out For?</strong></p>

<p>It’s well-known that many food products have a limited shelf life. These products aren’t indefinitely available or storable. In addition to the lot number, you might find other abbreviations on the packaging of products with expiration dates.</p>

<li><strong>TGT Date:</strong> TGT stands for &#8220;Te Gebruiken Tot&#8221; (Use By Date). This date is typically found on highly perishable products like meat or fish. Health issues can occur if you consume products past the TGT date, so make sure these products leave your webshop, store, or warehouse well before the deadline.</li>



<li><strong>THT Date:</strong> THT stands for &#8220;Tenminste Houdbaar Tot&#8221; (Best Before Date). Many people throw away products that have passed the THT date, but that’s not necessary! The THT date indicates the date up until which the manufacturer guarantees good quality. After this date, the product may look or taste different but can still be consumed without health risks.</li>
</ul>



<p><strong>Note:</strong> The date on the packaging applies as long as the packaging remains unopened. Once the packaging is opened, the shelf life decreases rapidly. Some suppliers address this by indicating how long the product can be stored after opening.</p>

<p><strong>1. Check your inventory levels in advance</strong><br>Long before the rush, assess whether your stock can handle the spike. If not, place additional orders with your supplier — early! Waiting until the last minute risks stockouts, which can result in lost revenue or unhappy customers. Long wait times lead to negative reviews, and in e-commerce, those reviews can hurt your brand fast.</p>
